Weight management.

Maintaining a healthy weight is important for your overall health and wellbeing. It can help to lower the risk of developing illnesses and conditions such as heart attacks, dementia and stroke and it can increase confidence and happiness, improving overall quality of life.

Making small changes to what you eat and drink along with moving your body more can help to make significant improvements to your health.

The National NHS website has information to help you manage your health, including information on weight management. This can be accessed here.

There is also a national NHS website called Better Health that has a range of free tools to help people to lose weight including weight loss plans and programmes.

Mounjaro – NHS Devon current position (30 June 2025)

Tirzepatide, commonly known as Mounjaro, is a drug that up to now has only been prescribed for people with type 2 diabetes. Recently published NHS guidance is now recommending this is also considered as an option for managing overweight and obesity, alongside a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity.

Provision of Mounjaro for weight management is yet to be implemented across Devon.

NHS Devon is therefore advising GPs to not prescribe Mounjaro for weight management at this time.

Patients with queries may wish to read patient-facing information pages on the MyHealth website Weight Management – My Condition – MyHealth Devon

Patients wishing to feedback to NHS Devon regarding its current position may do so at d-icb.patientexperience@nhs.net and NHS Devon Aperture House Pynes Hill, Rydon Lane Exeter, Devon EX2 5AZ.

Tirzepatide (Mounjaro®) price increase

For people who are self-funding Tirzepatide, please be aware that from 1 September 2025 the price of Tirzepatide is increasing.

If you would like to change from self-funding this to accessing it via the NHS, please note that the NHS in Devon has not yet implemented provision of Tirzepatide for weight management. We anticipate that some Devon GPs will be able to offer this treatment before the end of this calendar year, but only for patients who meet the NHS England nationally set priority criteria for access to it via a GP.

If you meet the NHS England nationally set criteria.  your GP will be able to review your health needs when the service is implemented, to determine the best approach to meet your needs. In the meantime, we advise you not to contact your GP about prescribing Tirzepatide for weight management.

Any person presenting to an NHS service with questions about their private Tirzepatide prescription, including stopping or tapering off the drug, will be directed to speak with their private provider.
